Renaissance Walkabouts - Renaissance Society CSUS Walkabouts Website
Renaissance Society

Welcome to Walkabouts!

If you are an active Renaissance Society member, we are accepting Walkabouts registrations now, and always!

As stated in the Renaissance Society's course catalog, we have our own Walkabouts registration system.  This is due to our having more to ask about — e.g., carpooling & zip codes, land line & cell phone numbers, and an opt-in meeting EU CDPR & US CAN-SPAM requirements.

We also allow each Walkabouts registration to be shared — such as amongst couples — thus getting a single shared email coming from us, not two emails.  Couples can also register with us individually, if they wish — thus each will get their own personalized emails from us.

Our Walkabouts registration also stretches across multiple CSUS Semesters.  Thus, a Walkabouts registration started for an upcoming CSUS Fall Semester will automatically continue through the following CSUS Spring Semester & CSUS Summer Semester.  Ditto for any new Walkabouts registration during any or before any CSUS Semester — it too will automatically continue through that same or upcoming CSUS Semester & as well, through the following CSUS Summer Semester.

Let's be absolutely clear — the only valid registration for Walkabouts — when you are already a member of Renaissance Society — is via the Walkabouts Registration tab on this Walkabouts webpage!

Yes, we are indeed open for new Walkabouts registrations!

Click on the Walkabouts Registration" tab further down on this webpage!

And, yes, you are indeed very welcome to join us whenever you want, all throughout each year!

Upcoming Walkabouts!

To see what we're planning next, click on on the Spring Semester, 2024 — February 7th through May 1st tab!

In the Spring Semester, 2024 we will be doing 12 more Walkabouts from February 7th through May 1st!  Of course, there are no Walkabouts when CSUS is on breaks!

Due to little or no interest — meaning no volunteer leaders — we are doing no Summer Semester, 2024 walks.

A brief Walkabouts history!

Walkabouts has now been an active part of the Renaissance Society since 1996 doing some seven hundred individual Walkabouts.

Indeed, there's some indications we started at the very beginnings of the Renaissance Society!

However, during the COVID-19 restrictions, we were required to cancel the last six individual Walkabouts during Spring Semester, 2020, but were able to startup again during Fall Semester, 2020 & Spring Semester, 2021 doing scaled-back  “Ad Hoc Core Walks” with no lunches.

After that, during Fall Semester, 2021, as the COVID-19 restrictions eased further, we were able to resume doing our traditional Walkabouts and lunches — and we are still continuing to do so!

To learn more about Walkabouts, click on the More About Walkabouts tab, plus each of the other tabs!

Who & how far?

  • The 'Tortoises' walk two miles.
  • The 'Hares' walk four miles.

When?

  • Announcements are at 9:25 AM, followed by stretches, & then the Walkabout at 9:30 AM!
  • Each Walkabout finishes about 10:45 to 11 AM, depending on distance & speed!
  • Then, if you choose to, we'll go to lunch!
  • Last of all, at 11 AM, you'll be sent the email for the following week's Walkabout — so you can make your plans on being there!

How large is Walkabouts?

We currently have 160 Renaissance Society members — less than our pre-COVID-19 280 Renaissance Society members — registered with Walkabouts — somewhat over 10% of the total membership!

Do I have to attend Walkabouts every week?

You are free to attend any Walkabout you want, and there's no need to contact us if you choose to attend, or not attend!

We have no maximum number of walkers.  Usually 30-40 people show up for Walkabouts, but we've gotten 40-60 participants, in normal, non-COVID-19 times!  Perhaps this semester we might break our record — a Walkabout with more than 60 participants!

And, you are always welcome to join us!  We are only as strong as our membership!

Each Walkabout has two volunteer Leaders — one for the Tortoises and one for the Hares.

The Walkabout Leaders determine their Walkaboutsubject to these principal requirements:
  1. Free parking (preferably) at the Starting Location.   winking smiley
  2. Restrooms at the Starting Location, or very nearby.   winking smiley
  3. Walkabout routes that provide a 2-mile segment for the Tortoises, and a 4-mile segment for the Hares.
  4. Choosing a restaurant with:
    1. Good food.
    2. Adequate parking.
    3. Sufficient size to handle several dozen of us.
    4. Will do separate checks.

Proposed Walkabouts that do not meet these requirements may be turned down by the Walkabout Coordinator(s).

The Walkabout Leaders will test-walk their Walkabout, to verify it is in good condition and to verify the distances for the Tortoise and the Hares segments.

The Walkabout Leaders will notify the Walkabout Coordinator(s) at least one month before their Walkabout's date of the details of their Walkabout , and — if it is a new Walkabout where a previous Walkabout flyer can't be revised & updated — then prepare a new flyer with written directions, descriptions, & any interesting facts about the park or area of their new Walkabout.

This will allow the flyer to be modified by the Walkabout Coordinator(s), as needed, to be consistent with our standardized flyer design.   The Walkabout Coordinator(s) will also, time permitting, prepare maps and other aids, such as pictures & restaurant website links, within the flyer.   And, the Walkabout Coordinator(s) will — after the current week's Walkabout has finished — send out an email to each Walkabout participant containing download links to the flyer for the following week's Walkabout.

Lastly, in the event of rain or flooding, the Walkabout Leaders make the "call" whether their Walkabout will proceed.   If the rain is heavy and it's windy & cold, a Walkabout is probably not going to happen.   Ditto on flooding — be prepared!   It has been said "The sun always shines on Walkabouts" since very few of nearly three hundred Walkabouts in the last several years needed to be cancelled due to rain — and several of them went on anyway. winking smiley

  1. This is a physical activity, so each walker is required to wear his or her Renaissance Society nametag, or an equivalent nametag, with emergency information filled-in.  If the Renaissance Society nametag or equivalent nametag is forgotten, then we will require each such walker to write out their emergency information before proceeding on the Walkabouts & give it to us.
  2. Each walker is expected to stay generally with the Walkabouts group, or tell the leader if they are leaving.
  3. Current membership with the Renaissance Society is required.  Update or join anew at the Membership button link above.
  4. Registration with the Walkabouts group is also required.  See the Register for Walkabouts section, below, for details.
  5. Walkers make their own choice to go to lunch, or not.
  6. Sorry, dogs are not allowed!
  7. And, lastly, we always walk on the left, so bikes can safely pass on our right!
  8. This is the standard for all trails in this region, with these exceptions:
    • UC Davis, where people walk on the right, and bikes approach on the left, and
    • CSUS, where there don't seem to be any rules on where to walk or bike!   winking smiley

NOTICE:
Walkers who do not comply with this safety requirement
will be not be permitted to participate in Walkabouts!

First of all, you must have a concurrent membership in Renaissance Society if you wish to be in Walkabouts.

If you're here, however, reading this, you may not know if you're already registered for Walkabouts — or not registered for Walkabouts!

Here's how to tell:

  1. You're already getting Walkabouts emails!

    1. You have been getting our our Walkabouts emails during:

      • Our CSUS Fall Semester, or
      • Our CSUS Spring Semester, or
      • Our CSUS Summer Semester up through mid-August.

      • Therefore, you are still Walkabouts registered, and need do nothing else until mid-August!

      • As stated at the start of this webpage:

      • “Our Walkabouts registration also stretches across multiple CSUS Semesters. ”

    1. But if you are reading this in mid-August — THIS IS IMPORTANT — you now need to update your Walkabouts registration for the upcoming CSUS Fall Semester, CSUS Spring Semester, & CSUS Summer Semester!

      • That will renew you through the upcoming CSUS Fall Semester, CSUS Spring Semester, and CSUS Summer Semester.

      • That's very easy to do!

      • In mid-August every year, we will send a personal email to each Walkabouts participant!

        1. When you get it, you will first need do is hit the Update Preferences link at the bottom of that email.

        2. Our email provider, MailChimp, will then send you an email where you need to again hit the Update Preferences link.

        3. That will open up a special form where you need to move on down the form, looking for the entry that says CSUS Semesters through Summer, 2024!

        4. Within that database field, just below that, click on the round checkbox next to Yes, when clicked!

          • Likewise, if you have any other changes, such as new phone numbers, make them too!

        5. Now hit the bright green Update Profile button at the bottom of the Walkabouts registration form!

        6. Miss this step & you will cease getting Walkabouts email, since you won't any longer be currently registered with Walkabouts!

        7. So, once you hit the bright green Update Profile button, you'll be registered for Walkabouts through summer, 2024!  Welcome back!

        8. And, if you want to drop out of Walkabouts — it's easy — just hit the unregister from Walkabouts link at the bottom of any email we‘ve sent you.  Sorry to see you go!

        1. You're not getting Walkabouts emails!

        • Click on the button below to newly register for Walkabouts only after you have already joined the Renaissance Society!

        • That's the only way we can send you Walkabout emails & other updates!

        1. After hitting this button, our email provider, MailChimp, will send you an email saying:

        2. "If you made this request, and would like to change your preferences, use the link below."

        3. Click on that link, and then you will be sent to our Walkabouts registration page.

You will next be prompted to fill in our Walkabouts registration form.

Be sure to fill-in the radio button which asks if you want to register with Walkabouts from now through Summer Semester, 2024!

When you complete it, hit the Subscribe button.

    2. Another form, from MailChimp, will now pop-up.  Check the I'll not a robot box, & hit the Subscribe to list button.

    3. Another form with several pictures will now pop-up.  Choose those which match the question being asked.  Again hit the Subscribe to list button.  This is necessary to intercept "robotic code" trying to scam us humans! winking smiley

    4. You will next get an email — and inside it, you will need to click the Yes, subscribe me to this list button to confirm we have your working email address.

    5. Last of all, you will get another email confirming you are registered to Walkabouts.  If you don't get it, you missed one of the steps! winking smiley
